Kenneth Shipp hails from St. Louis, MO as an instructor who grew up dancing hip-hop and DJing breaking comps before jumping into blues. He has spent the past few years passionately studying the family of blues idioms, incorporating his nerdy personality along the way. Kenneth’s life experiences inform his dancing and teaching style so that students walk away with a better historical and contextual understanding. With every class and practice, he'll encourage you to approach social dancing with coolness, relaxation, or in other words “Chill The F$%& Out.” When he’s not dancing, you can likely find him ranting about the latest blockbuster movie, game, or nerd convention, or desperately trying to dismantle toxic institutions.

I'll leave the details of the fundraiser to you to read at the link. If you don't want to read what this means to me, the TL;DR version is that this fundraiser is how I found out about Boy's passing, and his daughter shouldn't have to lose the legacy her father left for her.
As for my experience:
We stumbled upon Boy Blues Bar in Chiang Mai almost by accident 11 years ago. In the midst of all the touristy kitsch of the Kalare Night Bazaar, I heard the sounds of some legitimate live blues and stopped in my tracks. Followed the music up to the bar above the market and stayed all night. And the next night and the one after that. We danced the blues, enjoyed some beers, and made friends. A few years later I brought a friend (Moses Lei), and Boy encouraged me to sing a few during the Monday night jam.
It was so refreshing to hear Boy play - he truly loved the blues; he sounded like someone who studies and paid homage to the great bluesmen, not just some cover band or some guy who did Mustang Sally and SRV covers. Both trips I was made to feel like family. And when the bar closed up, we would all pile into several tuk-tuk and head over to Brasserie for more late night beers and music.
At Blue Note, we think and talk a lot about legacy - both the legacy of the blues in general but also the legacies of individual blues musicians and the mark they left on the world. Knowing so many working musicians around the US and around the world - not being studio recording artists, it is a labour of passion and love, not a lifestyle of glamour. While I'm not making claims on behalf of Boy about what mark he wanted to leave on the blues as a Black American art form, I know he had deep respect for the music, and he had a deep love for his daughter. No daughter should have to lose the legacy her father intended for her.
